During Etra et avoir for the outside shots a long shot dominates, but for the inside shots mid shots and close ups dominate. In the outside shots there is alot of long cuts of the surrounding area. There are a couple of establishing shots made of the school and the area around it. In the school there are alot of shots of the teacher talking to the students, close ups of the students faces as they talk to the teacher. In the first part of the film we are introduced mostly to the teacher and JoJo. The main focus is on JoJo because he has a very short attention span and he doesn't always focus on his work as much as he should. He also has a close relationship with the teacher so focusing on JoJo and the teacher more than any of the other students would show this relationship.  For the sound track the music is only played when they camera is focusing on the outside world, but when it is in the classroom there is no music as there is people talking.

In Etra et avoir all the shots are very long. Compared to other films we have watched, it has the smallest amount of shots in it. In Dog Town and the Z-Boys there are a lot more shots in it and they are shorter shots. With some parts of this film there are still images and when the sound track is being played the pictures flick to the beat of the music. Some of the shots flick through interviews and don't last long at all, where as in etra et avoir there aren't any interviews just watching the teacher talking to his pupils. The form of this film shows that the community is closely knitted together and quite poor. However in Dog Town and the Z-Boys even though it is also a closely knitted together community, it has a different atmosphere to it than in etra et avoir. In Dog Town and the Z-Boys the people (surfers) are not calm chilled out people so therefore the form of the film making is not going to be as calm as etra et avoir. They would both have different audiences, because if you were to get the audience for dog town and the z-boys and make them watch etra et avoir they will find it borig as they will be used to watching more up beat films with alot of music in it n alot more excitement.

Etre Et Avoir

Film Language

Etre Et Avoir is filmed on a tripod (static) and mostly long shot but does have a few mid shots. The editing is quite slow as it focus's on one cut for quite a while before it changes.

Documentary Techniques

There are no interviews in this piece but there is alot of the teacher asking his pupils questions. There is no voice over it is all diagetic sound. We are also not aware of the documentary-maker in this piece either as it is also from his point of view.

Sound

There is the sound of the teacher and his pupils talking and also music. In some parts of this clip the teacher would be talkin to one pupil but the camera will be focusing on another pupil.

This documentary is about a day in a french school and what the pupils so in their school day.

Bob Dylan Don't Look Back

Film Language

In this piece the camera is hand held to make it look like its a persons point of view. There is more of a variety of shots in thsi film as it has started to get more advanced.
Documentary Techniques
For this piece there are interviews but only small ones with bob dylan. There is diagetic sound in this clip. We are not aware of the documentary -maker as he/she stays behind the camera but the documentary is shot from their point of view.
Sound
For this piece it's just people talking, interviews, generla chatting etc.
This documentary is about Bob Dylan's life as a singer. I think that this was made to give people an idea of how different people live and how they adapt their lives to different things like work, families etc.

Nanook of the North 1922

Film Language

For this piece long shots and medium close ups are used, throughout the clip the camera would have been static as it would have been too big to be hand held. For this piece there is more of a variety of shots used where as in the Lumiere Brothers short clip of workers exiting the factory where one shot is used. The editing for this piece is slow as in one minuet there is seven cuts.

Documentary Techniques

Throughout this film there are no interviews film language was still in early stages and they didn't have the technology to overlay the voice. Instead of a voice over they used text for captions. For this film the documentary-maker is not shown.

Sound

The only sound used in this piece is music. The music used is a happy sounding track to show that the people in the film are happy. The effect of the music makes the audience feel happy and to show that the people in the film are in a happy mood.

This documentary is about a family of eskimos that are building an igloo for a house. It shows how they do it and al the fun they have whilst making it. This was made to show people what it was like in different parts of the world because people wouldn't have traveled very much back in those days. The audience for this piece would have been everybody as they would have all wanted to know what it was like in different parts of the world.

Lumiere Brothers.

Film language

Throughout the whole clip there is only one shot used this is a long shot. This shot dominates the whole clip and there is no variety of different shots. The camera would have been put on a tripod as it would have been to big for it to be hand held. Editing would probably have not been invented as media language would not have been invented at this time, therefore people would have not thought about doing it.

Documentary Techniques

In this particular clip there are no interviews as it would have been a trial run with the camera. There is no voice over as this was one of the first cameras invented so they wouldn’t have thought about putting sound on it at this point. We are not aware of the documentary maker as they focus on the people walking by and we do not hear any voice as there is no voice over.

Sound

There is no sound in the whole clip.

The Documentary.

All that is filmed in this clip is normal everyday people walking by. This would have been a trial run with the camera so nothing special would have been filmed. There is nothing that compares to any other genre because it was the first piece of film ever made. The audience for this would have been everybody because they would all be intrigued to see it as it is something new.
